DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, D. & R.G. Special (Denver & Rio Grande Special) marked mvt and dial, 17J, Model 1892, 18S, gold-filled OF recase, fancy white enamel SS dial with maroon colored numerals having blue glass insets, blue five-minute numerals outside red glass five-minute markers, gold foliate decoration above signature, SW-LS, nickel damascene, gilt regulator assembly, mvt screws, and winding wheel hubs, s#7489895. A rare and desirable double signed railroad marking, this is the first example of this watch we have seen with a fancy dial bearing D. & R.G. Special marking.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking somewhat sluggishly on a full wind, overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with few mild fine to micro-fine scratches, larger winding wheel with a patch of oxide to one side, some smaller spots of oxide scattered elsewhere to winding wheels, barrel bridge with a mismatched non-gilt screw; dial with hls from 11:30 and 12:30 to center, some hls above seconds-register, within seconds-register, and below seconds-register; excellent hands, small bit of oxide to tip of minute; case shows hardly any wear, few mild small dings to rear which are evident to inner surface of lid but have little exterior visibility, excellent engine turning detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.
